Annie and Benjamin, who both lived in the orphanage, had to start working from a young age. Annie felt jealous of Benjamin because he got to go outside every day with other boys to sell newspapers or gather donations, while Annie and the other girls were stuck inside doing chores like cleaning, cooking, and sewing. Annie always thought this was dull and wished she could join Benjamin just once to experience the world beyond the orphanage.
